How To Choose a Domain Name
How to choose a domain name?
Every month people ask me what the best way to choose a domain name is, and I realized I’ve never actually written down my answers.
So I decided to make a list of things to consider while choosing your domain name.
- Always choose the ‘.com’ version if available. Most people associate a ‘.com’ site address with being the best and most professional.
- Do not include any dashes or underscores in your domain name.
- Do not include numbers or any symbols. Only use the letters A – Z.
- Make sure the domain name is easy to say and rolls off the tongue.
- Try not to use letters that can be hard to understand or differentiate on radio ads and commercials. Like B and D, S or F, etc.
- Pick domain names that are catchy and easy to spell.
Another thing to consider is whether you want a keyword based domain name or a branding domain name. A branding domain would be something like expedia.com, where as a keyword based domain name would be something like vacationrentals.com. Either one works, although using a keyword based domain name will most likely allow you to rank a bit quicker for those keywords and you’ll be able to do it with less back link building work.
Some of the hosts I have used to register domain names are:
Aff Links
1and1.com
Godaddy.com
Hostgator.com
And finally, when deciding on your domain name, choose something you like and are comfortable using for years to come.
