If you want something even cheaper than hostels and much more personal, than you may want to check out the website

For a low price, or sometimes free you can sleep on someone’s couch (hence the name), in their guest room, on the floor, whatever. People like this because it’s a lot more personal. In some cases, the hosts will take their guests out and show them the city.
I have not tried this, but I have a lot of friends who have and they have all had great experiences.
